Raw Banana Icecream Recipe

A great way to use up very ripe bananas (instead of banana cake or muffins!)
you need: 20 pitted dates - chopped, 2 tablespns raw honey, 2 tablespns extra virgin coconut oil (I found this at CS organics - very quite $$ but 1 bottle will go far!), 1 teaspoon vanilla extract - I used real (not imitation) vanilla essence, pinch cinnamon, 4 cups (sliced) ripe bananas.

Cover and soak dates in lukewarm water for 10 mins. Drain dates and reserve liquid.
Blend dates with 3-4 tablespoons of the liquid in a blender. Add honey, coconut oil, vanilla and cinnamon and blend until smooth.
Add bananas and blend until mostly smooth (can leave it a little bit chunky if desired).
Transfer to a stainless steel bowl.
Freeze bowl (I popped a bit of glad wrap over the top), stir a couple of times before it reaches a semi-solid state, and freeze overnight.
Allow to thaw at room temp 5-10 mins before serving.

Would add a photo but it was too delicious and we've eaten it all!

I was fortunate to meet Iona of Hirethings.co.nz, which is quite frankly a very brilliant website.

Hirethings quite simply allows you to hire stuff from other people or (if you have some useful stuff at home) it allows you to hire it out to other people!

You might want to hire a bouncy castle, a bubble machine, kids costumes, a buggy, high chair, baby swing, backpack, the list goes on...

Environmentally friendly (big tick) and makes total sense!

I must confess, I went to (the warehouse) today! I haven't been in there for 5 years, but need called, I wanted some photo frames for these lovely new prints from Lovely Sweet William and a friend told me they had some lovely vintagey ones. Then I remembered why I hadn't been for 5 years - other then the hideous toxic plastic smell that is - every time I visit the Warehouse I emerge having spent at least $60 and without the said item I went in for....yes it happened this time too. But I do have some lovely baskets made from recycled newspaper which will be great for shop display this Christmas! sigh!

Just picked up a new size Cyclops Organic Yoghurt at the supermarket (Pak n Save - Lower Hutt) and had to blog about it!

I always get excited about new organic food items because it is refreshing to have something new & instant to feed my little one. Yes, homebaking would be good but I never seem to find the time...

Cyclops have bought out this new 125g yoghurt which is a handy size for toddlers, school lunches. It is an expensive treat but of course the pottles are recyclable and refillable!

Our Christmas Break

This Christmas we headed North for a big family get-together. Our road trip took us from Wellington to Auckland (via Taranaki) and onto Keri Keri in the fabulous Bay of Islands.

Here are our organic highlights(!)

Huckleberry Farms in Auckland is AMAZING. Just about every organic/eco-friendly product you can possible ever need, the staff are friendly and they have a great deli/juice counter (!) I was particularly taken with their banana/berry smoothies :)

Onto the Bay of Islands which is clearly not far behind Nelson in terms of eco awareness. Keri Keri is home to Living Nature - where their office and spa retreat is based.

We visited Mahoe Cheeses which has a gift shop as well as cheese factory where you can buy their cheeses at great(!) factory prices.

For eco-adventures, visit Pahia. We took a cruise but missed out on swimming with the dolphins , as you are not permitted to swim when they have young with them (did you know dolphins breastfeed their young every three minutes). Still it was wonderful to be out on the water and feel the sea breezes and sunshine.

On our journey south, we passed through Kaiwaka, a small town with an amazing looking organic cafe - Eutopia (which was sadly closed). Pictured above. If you want to visit Eutopia, it is about one and a 1/4 hours drive north of Auckland.

After checking out this amazing building, we endured a dodgy toasted sandwich over the road, but then chanced upon a wonderful Dutch shop which had a great selection of Dutch specialities and organic groceries - which made the stop worthwhile!

Just north of Kaiwaka is Koanga Gardens which has everything you will need to grow your own organic, nutrient dense, heirloom fruit and vegetables, plus books and two lines of NZ made shoes.

... our journey has come to an end, which means we are back in town, our Petone store is open, and we have lots of exciting new products arriving in store ... see you soon!

Our reviewer said:

The nappy: They have never leaked for me, their stay-dry lining really works and is incredible at trapping moisture away from baby skin, we don't get any red marks, and they are very straight-forward to wash. (I prefer these to pockets where you need to pull the wet inserts out - not a fan of that).

The cover: I found this great and use this constantly. Good design. I have also used it with a cotton type nappy as a liner inside it and it worked well. Recommended!

Organic Selections Baby Shampoo and Baby Moisturizer

We were delighted to review Organic Selections Baby Shampoo and Baby Moisturizer from Little Miracles. These delicious-scented baby products scored really highly with our reviewer under a number of criteria.

"They are packaged in recyclable (number 2) plastic bottles, and contain no parabens, pthalates, SLS, artificial fragrances or artificial ingredients of any kind. The detergent in the shampoo is a coconut derivative, so gentle on baby's skin. I have used the shampoo on my baby and my 4 year old, both of whom are prone to eczema and rashes, and neither of them reacted, which is a definite thumbs up!

The moisturizer is very nice too, although as it is scented (with essential oils) children with active eczema may react to it (although my girls were fine).

Soap nuts!

I heard about these today and they sound amazing - SoapNuts are small magical berries from the SoapNut tree (sapindus mukorossi) growing wild in Northern India. The berry is gathered by hand, dried by the sun, and then deseeded ready for use.

SoapNuts contain saponin that release rich soapy suds when wet and have strong antibacterial properties that effectively replace chemical detergents, soaps and shampoo.

What is saponin? I consulted the Wikepedia on this one. The Wikepedia reveals some interesting facts like SoapNuts are a popular ingredient in Ayurvedic shampoos and cleansers. They are used in Ayurvedic medicine as a treatment for eczema, psoriasis, and for removing freckles.

However, saponin (from the SoapNut) is poisonous if swallowed, so must be stored in a child-proof container.

The SoapNuts web site has load of uses for SoapNuts (crushed or liquid) not just for washing your clothes, but for your dishwasher, and cleaning around the home.

Ecobots, who also stock resuable cloth nappies, are stockists of SoapNuts and recommend them for chemical and fragrance free nappy washing!

Imagine my surprise, when I came across this... Ceres Enterprises Sunflower Seeds.
If you are a regular organics buyer, it would pay to check this recall, as it does affect some Venerdi breads, Organic Bakeworks bread, cookies and gluten-free breadcrumbs, and Purebread muesli. Follow the link and check the products and dates affected.

Nelson - the organic centre of NZ !

ok I have been a bad blogger this month ... good excuse, have been on holiday tripping around Nelson and Bays.

What better time to tell you about the organic treats the region has to offer...
We stayed at the Sunset Valley Vineyard which was a very tranquil and relaxing spot, and an organic vineyard established 15 years ago in the Moutere Valley. I already knew and loved their wines, so it was great to visit the spot where the wine (I find on on the shelves at CS Organics) originates from!

We lunched at the Riverside Cafe, Lower Moutere which is home to NZ's oldest commune. Beautiful setting and freshly prepared food including vegetables and salads from their own organic gardens.

Next on our list to visit was Arcadia Organics (Motueka), a long-established organic shop with a fantastic selection and delicious cafe. We also discovered the Pulsing Patch - a roadside organic fruit and vege stop (Riwaka - just outside Motueka). The small shop also sells a variety of herbs, spices and bottled fruit.

We also indulged in beer (well, not me) at Founders Organic Brewery in Nelson. The beer was apparently very good.

After the luxury of Sunset Valley, we headed to Kaiteriteri Beach and camped under the stars.

An overall good experience was somewhat marred by being situated right across from a group of 4 chainsmokers , so we abandoned camp for most of 2 days until they left (Soapbox: All campsites in NZ should be non-smoking or have smoking "areas").

Other organic treats included visiting Takaka which has even more organic shops and cafes.

We had a need for some baby balm to sooth rashy skin, and came across a balm that incredibly we hadn't seen before - "Pot of Gold". Wow, that stuff is great!

Three cheers (we love) those fabulous folks at Arcadia Organics and Golden Bay Organics who had our flyers out on display.

We recently send our flyers all over the country to every organics store and cafe you can imagine, so we can get word out to you good folks, I like to see that I'm not wasting effort & paper (even if it is recycled).

... and why the centre of New Zealand? Quite literally, Nelson is. After 3 days of dancing in Nelson at the "Ceroc Summer Camp", Hayley (owner of Ceroc Nelson) marched us up the steepest hill she could find to the official "Centre of NZ". Luckily, the view was just awesome!

Recyclable water bottles

I just checked out the Good Water web site.... did you realise that the PET water bottles that you put in your recycled bin (with good intentions) are recycled in China! All those water bottles being transported to China are just adding to the global warming problem!

We encourage the use of reusable water bottles (we use Kleen Kanteen - now known as Eco Tankas).

However, when you are out & about and need them - water bottles made from plant-based renewable resources are now available in NZ from Good Water.

Available at organic stores, supermarkets and petrol stations nationwide at $2.80 per bottle.

In the United States, BIOTA water bottles are sold at select natural foods and gourmet supermarkets.

Designer wipes boxes

My little organic tot is now 4 and a half but I still carry eco wipes in my handbag for those little emergencies, like a quick hand wipe before lunch (I try and avoid the handwash in most public toilets!) These would be just fab to carry round.

earth friendly actvities at The Blueberry Farm over summer

The Blueberry Farm are running fun eco-friendly activities for 3 years+ run throughout January and February.

Activities are include: learning to make a simple vege garden from a hay bale, making organic blueberry icecream and worm farm races!

These activities are being run by "Between the Blues", an Organic Environmental Education trust that has created an engaging hands-on living laboratory on the Blueberry Farm.

I just had my first organic sugaring experience, so for something different, I'll tell you about it.

Organic Hand Sugaring is virtually unheard of in NZ - there is only one current practitioner, who just happens to be in my neighbourhood - Lower Hutt!

It is an ancient Middle Eastern method of hair removal that has been updated to the 21st century. As a sign of purity and cleanliness, a Middle Eastern bride-to-be would have all her body hair removed and and organic hand sugaring was the most effective way fo achieving this with the least amount of discomfort (although like waxing of course there is some discomfort).

Organic Hand Sugaring definitely leaves the skin feeling softer and silkier as the sugar paste exfoliates at the same time. It is made from all natural ingredients - lemon juice, sugar and water. Jane (who runs her home-based practice in Lower Hutt) also uses special corn-starch powder (not talcum) before applying the paste. All her soaps and lotions are SLS free. Jane who has international qualifications in Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Organic Sugaring also practices reflexology and aromatherapy massage at her Maungaraki (Lower Hutt) home. No web site. Tips to reduce climate change

The BIGGEST change you can make is to leave you car at home for trips less than 2km. Apparently this is one-third of all the car trips we make!

This would save 1710kg (of Co2) or $1200 per year for the average NZ family.

Buy a more fuel-efficent car - see our article on Greener Motoring.
Just switching to a car that uses 6 litre of fuel per 100km rather than 8 litres would save the average family 640kg Co2 or $450.

Also, turn off your car when idling for more than 10 seconds (Zoe-B Weekly)

Other tips include:
- reduce your use of electric heaters (with electricity prices most of us are doing that anyway!)
- take shorter showers and use an aerated flow showerhead
- wash clothes in cold water
- replace your five most used light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones
- put insulating wrap around your hwc
- turn off appliances (esp your computer) when not in use
- check the energy efficient ratings on appliances when you buy them
- buy local!

An Inconvenient Truth

If you haven't seen "An Inconvenient Truth," which won an Academy Award earlier this year, you must!

Former Vice President Al Gore, is the newly named co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, said Friday that global warming is the most dangerous challenge facing humanity. This film spells it out in black and white. (Enviro.org.au)

Initially, I held back from seeing the film because I thought I might get too depressed! But Al Gore tells it like it is without getting hysterical and you realise, we can all play our part in the way we live and purchasing decisions we make.

The film title is so apt, we live in a society of convenience - fast foods, convenience meals, microwaves, cellphones, disposable nappies etc etc.

Likewise, Natural Parenting is not always "convenient", you have to go to extra effort to source purchases, grow or buy organic food but it has its' rewards!

I also attended an address yesterday by (Jeanette Fitzsimons, Green Party) on climate change. What the "Inconvenient Truth" and this address made me realise is that the world just isn't going to be around for our precious next generation, unless we all take drastic action NOW.

The Green Party have published a pocket guide on ways you can make a personal contribution to reduce Co2 emissions (see my next blog).

It's a worldwide trend. Clothing labels are starting to embrace Organic and eco friendly fabric, and as John Patrick said "Companies that don't look into using recycled goods or choosing biodegradable elements are quickly becoming archaic".

This is starting to catch on in NZ - with designers like Kate Sylvester launching her High Summer five-piece organic cotton collection, featuring recycled buttons. Karen Walker stores already have Levis Eco Jeans and they are coming to Levis stores around NZ (later this year). Workshop have some styles that use undyed organic yarn that is bio-washed to give a naturally worn-in feel. The clothing scene in NZ is definitely set to change.

Been doing lots of reading about plastic water bottles and other options...

PET plastic is a petroleum product.

In 2004 28,000 tonnes of plastic packaging was recycled (20% of the plastic packaging consumed in New Zealand), making PET recycling approximately 30% of the total recycled material.

In the U.S., because it is presently recycled at such low rates, tens of billions of new plastic bottles must be manufactured each year from virgin materials—fossil fuels—to replace those bottles that were not recycled. The Container Recycling Institute estimates that approximately 18 million barrels of crude oil equivalent were consumed in 2005 to replace the 2 million tons of PET bottles that were wasted instead of recycled.

The good news is that degradable and bio-based plastics are increasingly entering the market. Bio-based plastics are projected to increase to 10% of the world supply of plastic by 2020.

However, there are risks of contaminating recycling schemes because we don't have infrared recycling technology in NZ.

An example of bio products available are potato-starch plates (NZ) and corn-based PLA compostable water bottles - BIOTA (only available in the U.S.)

BIOTA is sold at select natural foods and gourmet supermarkets throughout the United States. Eventually, consumers across the United States will be able to purchase BIOTA from stores.

More toxic scares

Last week it was formaldehyde levels in children's clothing.

Today, a web site visitor alerted me to the latest news scare in the US. The chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA) - which is commonly found in plastics and is known to leech out into food and liquids it is in contact with.

We already knew about the risks associated with using polycarbonate baby bottles and recommend the use of glass bottles instead.

However, it appears that Bisphenol-A is not just an ingredient in the plastics used in baby bottles, but toddler sipper cups and the resin lining of infant formula tins!

Tests showing the connection between Bisphenol-A (BPA) and health risks for children and pregnant women are numerous and conducted on both a national and international level.

Recently, 38 Independent Specialists in BPA toxicity from around the world issued a consensus statement saying that BPA present a clear risk to human health, including as a potential carcinogen and in abnormal sexual development.

What you can do?
- breastfeeding is best!
- use glass bottles for bottle feeding
- use non-polycarbonate sippy cups.
Tommy Tippee easiflow insulated bottle is polypropylene with a silicon straw (available in NZ supermarkets) or Klean Kanteen (stainless steel, with non-BPA plastic sipper)
- if you introduce your children to using a small glass as early as practicable, then the sippy cup will only be needed for car journeys etc
- we are in the process of investigating whether the resin is used in organic formula cans
- switch your child to organic cows milk or A2 milk (after 12 months)

-tell others and spread the word ... public outcry is the fastest way to effect change!
